Church of Ireland

St. John's Church of Ireland (or the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Parish of Killyleagh to give it is full title) has one of the oldest churches still in use.

St Johns Church of Ireland, Killyleagh. The present church was built by James Hamilton (later to become Viscount Clandeboye) and consecrated on the 2nd October 1640. The church and surrounding graveyard occupy 11/2 acres on an elevated site overlooking the town and Strangford Lough. The original building would probably have been a T-shaped structure similar to Clogher Cathedral.

Noteable points to interest inside the Church are the font, which is of 11th or 12th century origin and is sculpted in red porphyry from Egypt; and the elaborate carvings of Celtic designs on both the choir stalls and Communion Table.

One of the past Minister's of St. John's was the Rev Dr Edward Hincks, a famous Egyptologist.

The current Minister is Rev Jerome Munyangaju. Rev Jerome was born in Rwanda and served as a Minister in Tanzania before coming to Northern Ireland in 1995.

In recent years St. John's has played an active role with other churches in Community Alpha courses. As well as hosting a regular meeting of local senior citizens and organising "Fun and Fellowship" events, St. John's also is also active further afield as a link Parish to the Kibungo Diocese in Rwanda.

The main Morning Service is held at 11.30 am each Sunday (except during July and August when it is held at 11.00 am).
