Viking festival gears up

Preparations for this year's Killyleagh Viking Boat Festival are well advanced, with organisers hoping that the number of spectators will build on the record crowds attending last year.

This year's Festival, which will run between May 27 - 29, will be even larger, with more craft stalls and bigger venues for the evening entertainment.

"What has surprised us most is the fact that the same competitors are not only returning but they have encouraged other teams to enter, and with the Norwegian teams entering it is a truly international event," said a spokesperson for the Festival.

He added: "The Norwegians have really taken to the event and will be in Killyleagh throughout the weekend, dressed in Viking costume, helping to promote the event.

Supported by Down Council and a number of local businesses, organisers are confident that sponsorship will increase nearer the date.

Anyone can enter a team provided the competitors are over 16. At present teams from Killyleagh and Downpatrick have entered and organisers are hoping that sports clubs throughout the district will also enter.
